Painful Neuropathy

Painful neuropathy is a disorder in which damaged or dysfunctional nerves produce persistent pain, often in the hands, feet, or other peripheral regions. Nerve injury can trigger abnormal spontaneous firing and heightened sensitivity, causing burning, shooting, electric, or stabbing sensations even when tissue injury is absent. In medicine, recognizing this pattern helps clinicians distinguish neuropathic pain from inflammatory or musculoskeletal pain and investigate causes such as diabetes, chemotherapy, infection, or nerve compression. Accurate assessment supports targeted management, including treatment of the underlying cause, symptom control, and strategies that reduce functional impairment and improve quality of life.

2025

This video demonstrates a method for establishing a small fiber neuropathy model in mice using the TRPV1 agonist resiniferatoxin (RTX). It outlines the steps involved in administering RTX to mice and explains how RTX induces neuronal death in small-diameter sensory neurons, thereby establishing the neuropathy model.

The goal of this protocol is to photochemically induce ischemic injury to the posterior optic nerve in rat. This model is critical to studies of the pathophysiology of posterior ischemic optic neuropathy, and therapeutic approaches for this and other optic neuropathies, as well as of other CNS ischemic diseases.

DefinitionDiabetic neuropathy is nerve damage caused by long-standing diabetes mellitus. It results directly from prolonged high blood sugar levels.PathophysiologyThe pathophysiology of diabetic neuropathy involves both metabolic and vascular disturbances triggered by chronic hyperglycemia.Metabolic injury: Elevated glucose levels activate the polyol pathway within nerve cells, leading to the accumulation of sorbitol and fructose. This increases oxidative stress, disrupts normal nerve...
