Porcine Lung Model

A porcine lung model is an in vivo, ex vivo, or isolated lung preparation that uses pig respiratory anatomy and physiology to investigate pulmonary function and disease. Because porcine airways, alveolar structure, and ventilation-perfusion relationships resemble those of humans, researchers can assess how controlled changes in pressure, airflow, perfusion, or tissue injury affect gas exchange and mechanics. These models support studies of respiratory infections, acute lung injury, ventilation strategies, transplantation, and inhaled therapies. They also provide a bridge between basic experiments and clinical research by enabling evaluation of devices, treatments, and physiological outcomes before human studies.

Here, we describe the necessary steps for establishing a rat EVLP model and show the inflammatory profile associated with the perfused lungs. The aim is to propagate knowledge and experiences about the rat EVLP model, enabling the integral understanding of the biological responses associated with that revolutionary technique.
