Post-embolization Pain

Post-embolization pain is discomfort that develops after an embolization procedure, in which blood flow to a targeted vessel or tissue is intentionally blocked to treat conditions such as tumors, vascular malformations, or bleeding. The pain results primarily from temporary ischemia, local inflammation, and tissue injury caused by reduced oxygen delivery and, in some organs, swelling or capsular distention. Its severity and duration vary with the treated site, embolic material, and extent of occlusion. Recognizing this expected response helps clinicians provide appropriate analgesia, distinguish it from complications such as infection or non-target ischemia, and improve recovery after interventional treatment.

Diffuse noxious inhibitory control, temporal summation and wound hyperalgesia testing are demonstrated in the obstetric patient. These tests evaluate inhibitory and excitatory mechanisms of pain processing and are here utilized to evaluate endogenous analgesia at different time-points during pregnancy and the peripartum period to help reveal individual s risk for persistent pain.

We present a protocol to measure [14C]-iodoantipyrine (IAP) uptake and assess the activation of neural substrates that are involved in central post-stroke pain (CPSP) in a rodent model.

Combination of High Ligation and Intraoperative Embolization Using Polidocanol for Treatment of Varicoceles

To reduce the postoperative recurrence rate of varicocelectomy, we combined high ligation of varicocele with intraoperative embolization. We injected polidocanol from the spermatic vein during surgery to embolize the branches of the spermatic vein and collateral veins. This is an alternative surgical method for the treatment of varicocele.

Provided here is a protocol that details steps to establish an animal model of chronic post-ischemia pain (CPIP). This is a well-recognized model mimicking human complex regional pain syndrome type-I. Mechanical and thermal hypersensitivities are further evaluated, as well as capsaicin-induced nocifensive behaviors observed in the CPIP rat model.
