Primary Sjogren's Syndrome

Primary Sjögren’s syndrome is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease in which the immune system primarily targets moisture-producing exocrine glands, causing persistent dry eyes and dry mouth. Lymphocytic infiltration and inflammation damage the lacrimal and salivary glands, while autoantibodies and broader immune dysregulation can affect organs such as the joints, lungs, kidneys, and nervous system. Clinical evaluation combines symptom assessment, eye and salivary-gland testing, blood markers, and sometimes tissue biopsy to support diagnosis and distinguish primary disease from secondary Sjögren’s syndrome. Understanding its mechanisms guides treatment of glandular symptoms, monitoring for systemic complications, and research into targeted immunotherapies.

An EEG experimental protocol is designed to clarify the interplay between conscious and non-conscious representations of emotional faces in patients with Asperger's syndrome. The technique suggests that patients with Asperger's syndrome have deficits in non-conscious representation of emotional faces, but have comparable performance in conscious representation with healthy controls.
