Rat Neurosurgery

Rat neurosurgery is the controlled surgical manipulation of the brain, spinal cord, or peripheral nervous system in rats, providing a model for investigating nervous-system structure and function. Under anesthesia and sterile conditions, researchers use carefully planned anatomical access and, when needed, stereotaxic coordinates to place instruments, deliver substances, create lesions, or implant recording devices with high spatial precision. These procedures support studies of neurological disease, brain injury, pain, neural circuits, and therapeutic interventions. By linking targeted neural manipulation with behavioral, physiological, or molecular outcomes, rat neurosurgery helps evaluate disease mechanisms and assess potential treatments before clinical research.

The protocol describes the fabrication of fully colored three-dimensional prints of patient-specific, anatomical skull models to be used for surgical simulation. The crucial steps of combining different imaging modalities, image segmentation, three-dimensional model extraction, and production of the prints are explained.

Posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus of prematurity (PHHP) can be modeled in neonatal rats by combining chorioamnionitis and intraventricular hemorrhage. The combination of these prenatal and postnatal events accurately recapitulates the clinical hallmarks of PHHP, including macrocephaly, ventriculomegaly, and elevated intracranial pressure, through the lifespan.
