Sternal Fracture Fixation

Sternal fracture fixation is a surgical method for stabilizing a broken sternum, the flat bone that forms the front of the chest and protects the heart and lungs. During the procedure, surgeons realign displaced fracture segments and secure them with plates and screws, restoring chest-wall stability and reducing painful movement during breathing, coughing, or physical activity. The technique is used when fractures are unstable, significantly displaced, associated with chest-wall deformity, or fail to heal with nonsurgical care. By supporting bone healing and improving mechanical stability, fixation can help reduce respiratory complications, persistent pain, and impaired function after chest trauma.

2026

The study innovatively combines sutures and titanium needles for stable internal fixation in a rat radial fracture model. Fracture healing was assessed via micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), and primary dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons were isolated and cultured for further investigation.
