Surgical Guidance

Surgical guidance is the use of imaging, anatomical information, planning tools, and intraoperative technologies to help clinicians locate targets and perform procedures accurately and safely. It works by integrating patient-specific data with surgical plans, then providing visual, navigational, or instrument-based feedback that supports orientation and decision-making during an operation. In medicine, surgical guidance can assist with minimally invasive procedures, tumor resection, orthopedic interventions, and other complex operations where anatomy may be difficult to visualize directly. By improving spatial awareness and supporting precise instrument placement, these approaches can enhance procedural consistency, reduce unnecessary tissue disruption, and advance image-guided and personalized surgery.

2016

This protocol describes a bioprinting methodology using an automated robotic depositing system that incorporates etched topographical guidance cues with the precision deposition of a cell bearing hydrogel bioink. The printed cells are directly delivered to the etched features and are able to sense and orientate with them.

Use of pHluorin to Assess the Dynamics of Axon Guidance Receptors in Cell Culture and in the Chick Embryo

We describe here the use of a pH-sensitive green fluorescent protein variant, pHluorin, to study the spatio-temporal dynamics of axon guidance receptors trafficking at the cell surface. The pHluorin-tagged receptor is expressed both in cell culture and in vivo, using electroporation of the chick embryo.

Surgery is the gold standard for accessible arteriovenious malformations (AVMs), and pre-operative embolization can simplify this procedure. We describe our approach for staged endovascular embolization and open resection of AVMs, and provide a representative clinical example highlighting the advantages of a comprehensively trained neurovascular surgeon leading a multi-disciplinary clinical team.

Endothelin-1 Induced Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion Model for Ischemic Stroke with Laser Doppler Flowmetry Guidance in Rat

Several animal models of cerebral ischemia have been developed to simulate the human condition of stroke. This protocol describes the endothelin-1 (ET-1) induced middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model for ischemic stroke in rats. In addition, important considerations, advantages, and shortcomings of this model are discussed.
