Uv Exposure Testing

UV exposure testing is the controlled assessment of how ultraviolet radiation affects biological tissues, materials, or protective products, making it important for evaluating safety, efficacy, and photodamage. Testing applies defined wavelengths, irradiance, and exposure durations, then measures responses such as erythema, DNA damage, oxidative stress, or changes in product performance. In medicine, these assays support sunscreen and photoprotective product evaluation, investigation of skin disorders, and safety assessment for therapeutic or diagnostic devices that emit UV radiation. Standardized exposure conditions also improve comparisons across studies and help researchers establish dose-response relationships for prevention and treatment.

Absorbance When light interacts with a substance, a portion of the light is absorbed while the rest is either reflected or transmitted through it. Substances that we perceive as having a color reflect light in the visible range. The color of the substance that we are able to see depends on which wavelength of light is reflected. A substance that we perceive as blue reflects light in the blue range (430 – 480 nm) of the visible spectrum. According to the color wheel, the same substance absorbs...

Minimum Erythematous Dose Assay: A Method for Measuring UV Sensitivity in Mouse Models

2023

This video describes a method to measure UV sensitivity in a humanized mouse model—a mouse model that mimics human skin. We determine the minimal erythematous dose (MED) of UV radiation that can cause erythema or edema on the skin. The method can help to find out the efficacy of drugs used to reduce UV sensitivity.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. B. Jill Venton - University of Virginia Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy is one of the most popular analytical techniques because it is very versatile and able to detect nearly every molecule. With UV-Vis spectroscopy, the UV-Vis light is passed through a sample and the transmittance of light by a sample is measured. From the transmittance (T), the absorbance can be calculated as A=-log (T). An absorbance spectrum is obtained that shows the absorbance of a...
