Venous Thrombosis Mouse Model

A venous thrombosis mouse model is an experimental system used to reproduce blood clot formation in veins and investigate the mechanisms, risk factors, and potential treatments of venous thromboembolism. Researchers commonly induce thrombosis by partially restricting or ligating the inferior vena cava, creating disturbed blood flow that promotes endothelial activation, platelet and leukocyte recruitment, and coagulation. By measuring thrombus incidence, size, composition, and resolution, investigators can examine interactions among blood cells, vascular tissues, and inflammatory pathways. These models support preclinical evaluation of anticoagulants and other therapies while improving understanding of thrombosis development, prevention, and recurrence in medicine.

Venous Thrombosis I: Introduction

2025

Venous thrombosis, the most common disorder of the veins, involves the formation of a thrombus or blood clot associated with vein inflammation. It can be classified as either superficial vein thrombosis or deep vein thrombosis.Superficial Vein Thrombosis: This involves the formation of a thrombus in a superficial vein, usually the greater or lesser saphenous vein. Though less severe than deep vein thrombosis (DVT), SVT can lead to complications if untreated.Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): This...

We describe a method for creating a reliable model of cerebral venous hypertension in the adult mouse. This model has been widely described and tested in the rat. This new counterpart in the mice opens the possibility of using genetic modified animals and thereby broadens the applications of the model.
