Acute Stroke Patients

Acute stroke patients are individuals experiencing sudden neurological dysfunction caused by interrupted cerebral blood flow or intracranial bleeding, making rapid recognition essential for limiting irreversible brain injury. In ischemic stroke, arterial occlusion deprives neurons of oxygen and glucose, whereas hemorrhage directly damages tissue and may increase intracranial pressure; both mechanisms disrupt neural circuits and produce deficits such as weakness, language impairment, or altered consciousness. In neuroscience and clinical care, neurological examination and brain imaging help distinguish stroke type, localize injury, and guide time-sensitive treatment, rehabilitation, and research into neuroprotection and recovery.

Endovascular Treatment of Acute Ischemic Stroke Using the Stent Retriever-Assisted Vacuum-Locked Extraction Technique

2025

Source: Schregel, K., et al. Optimized Management of Endovascular Treatment for Acute Ischemic Stroke. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates the endovascular treatment of acute ischemic stroke using the stent retriever-assisted vacuum-locked extraction technique. A guiding sheath is introduced through the femoral artery to reach the clot. A catheter with a stent retriever secures and extracts the clot. Vascular imaging is done to confirm successful reperfusion.

We explore the use of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to improve language abilities in patients with chronic stroke and non-fluent aphasia. After identifying a site in the right frontal gyrus for each patient that responds optimally to stimulation, we target this site during ten days of rTMS treatment.

Continuous 12-lead electrocardiographic (ECG) monitoring can identify transient myocardial ischemia, even when asymptomatic, among patients with suspected acute coronary syndrome (ACS). In this article we describe our method for initiating patient monitoring using a Holter device, downloading the ECG data for off-line analysis, and how to utilize the ECG software to identify transient ischemia.
