Bladder Catheterization

Bladder catheterization is a medical procedure that uses a flexible tube to drain urine from the bladder when normal voiding is impaired or monitoring is required. A catheter passes through the urethra into the bladder, allowing urine to flow into a collection system; intermittent catheterization removes the tube after drainage, whereas an indwelling catheter remains in place. In neuroscience, the procedure is especially relevant to neurogenic bladder, in which damage to brain, spinal cord, or peripheral nerves disrupts coordinated bladder storage and emptying. Proper catheterization can protect kidney function, reduce urinary retention, and support rehabilitation while clinicians assess changes in neural control.

The use of domestic and miniature pigs in science has increased significantly in recent years. By demonstrating how to perform intubation, transurethral bladder catheterization, femoral artery and vein catheterization, as well as transcardial perfusion, we aim to further increase the value of Göttingen minipigs in biomedical research.

Implantation of cancer cells into the organ of origin can serve as a useful preclinical model to evaluate novel therapies. MB49 bladder carcinoma cells can be grown within the bladder following intravesical instillation. This protocol demonstrates catheterization of the mouse bladder for the purpose of tumor implantation and adenoviral delivery.
