Dam System Monitoring

Drosophila Activity Monitor (DAM) system monitoring is a behavioral assay that continuously measures locomotor activity and sleep-wake patterns in fruit flies, making it useful for neuroscience research. Individual flies remain in narrow recording tubes while infrared beams detect and log movement as beam interruptions over time, producing activity profiles for each animal. Researchers use these data to examine circadian rhythms, sleep regulation, behavioral effects of genetic or environmental changes, and responses to experimental treatments. Because the system supports automated, long-duration recording across many subjects, it provides quantitative insight into neural mechanisms governing behavior and helps connect molecular or cellular changes with whole-animal phenotypes.

Design Example: Creating a Hydraulic Model of a Dam Spillway

2025

Scaled hydraulic models of dam spillways provide a practical way to replicate and study the intricate flow dynamics of these structures. Often built to a 1:15 ratio, these models allow for observing critical water behavior, such as velocity distribution, flow patterns, and energy dissipation. Through this controlled setup, researchers can closely examine how water flows over the spillway, supporting a detailed analysis of its performance. A fundamental principle behind these models is using...

This report describes a method for measuring Drosophila larval activity using the TriKinetics Drosophila Activity Monitor. The device employs infrared beams to detect movements of up to 16 individual animals. Data can be analyzed to represent motion parameters including rates and the positions of the animals within the assay chambers.

Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping

People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about the way you...

Holter Monitor: 24-Hour Monitoring

Holter monitoring is a continuous electrocardiography (ECG) recording that tracks the heart's electrical activity over an extended period, generally 24 to 48 hours. This noninvasive diagnostic tool detects irregular heart rhythms that may not be captured during a standard ECG performed in a clinical setting.DeviceThe Holter monitor is a portable, small device connected to several electrodes on the patient's chest. These electrodes detect the heart's electrical signals and transmit them to the...
