Dat Mediated Current

DAT-mediated current is the electrical signal produced when the dopamine transporter (DAT) moves dopamine and ions across a neuronal membrane, linking neurotransmitter clearance to membrane excitability. DAT couples dopamine uptake to the cotransport of sodium and chloride, generating an inward, transporter-associated current rather than an ion-channel current; psychostimulants such as amphetamine can also drive reverse transport and dopamine release. Researchers measure this current with electrophysiological methods to characterize transporter function, dopamine signaling, and drug actions. Its study helps clarify how synaptic dopamine is regulated and how altered transporter activity contributes to neurological and psychiatric disorders.

MicroRNA-Mediated Inhibition of Excitatory Postsynaptic Currents in Mouse Hippocampal Slices

2025

This video demonstrates microRNA-mediated inhibition of excitatory synaptic currents in mouse hippocampal brain slices. The CA3 neurons were infected with a recombinant viral vector harboring a construct for expressing a fluorescent reporter, a light-activated membrane channel, and a microRNA that downregulates the expression of voltage-gated calcium channels. Upon placing a slice in a recording chamber and patching a CA1 neuron with a recording pipette, light pulses were used to stimulate the...

Electrical Current

2023

Electrical current is defined as the rate at which charge flows. When there is a large current present, such as that used to run a refrigerator, a large amount of charge moves through the wire in a small amount of time. If the current is small, such as that used to operate a handheld calculator, a small amount of charge moves through the circuit over a long period of time. The SI unit for current is the ampere (A), named for the French physicist André-Marie Ampère (1775–1836). An ampere is the...
