Disturbance Manipulation

Disturbance manipulation is an experimental strategy that intentionally perturbs neural activity or circuit function to determine how specific brain processes contribute to behavior and physiology. Researchers introduce a controlled disturbance, such as changing neural signaling, sensory input, connectivity, or activity timing, and compare resulting measurements with an appropriate control condition. This causal approach helps distinguish neural correlates from mechanisms underlying perception, learning, decision-making, and disease-related dysfunction. In neuroscience, disturbance manipulation supports the analysis of circuit organization, reveals functional dependencies, and guides the development of interventions by showing how targeted changes affect the nervous system.

Ecological Disturbance

2026

An ecological disturbance is a temporary disruption in the environment resulting from abiotic, biotic, or anthropogenic factors, causing a pronounced change in an ecosystem. The impact of an ecological disturbance, which can depend on its intensity, frequency, and spatial distribution, plays a significant role in shaping the species diversity within the ecosystem.Ecological disturbances can be caused by an event as small as the trampling of underbrush to an incident as wide-ranging as a forest...

Disturbances in Heart Rhythm

2025

Arrhythmia or dysrhythmia refers to an abnormal heart rhythm caused by a defect in the heart's conduction system. It can cause the heart to beat irregularly, too quickly, or too slowly, leading to symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, and fainting. Factors such as stress, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, cocaine, certain drugs, congenital defects, diseases, and electrolyte abnormalities can trigger arrhythmias. Arrhythmias are categorized by their speed, rhythm, and origin. A slow heart...

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment as a Useful Adjunctive Tool for Pneumonia

Cited by 50 •

2014

Pneumonia is one of the top ten leading causes of death in the U.S. Osteopathic manipulative techniques (OMT) may be utilized as an adjunctive therapy in the treatment of pneumonia to enhance biomechanical and immune function; and ultimately, to reduce hospital stay, duration of antibiotics, incidence of respiratory failure, and mortality. In this video-article, we will review randomized controlled studies on the use of OMT in pneumonia patients, as well as demonstrate specific hands-on...

A Hemocyte Disturbance Assay to Assess Hemocyte Re-Adhesion to Hematopoietic Pockets

This video demonstrates the hemocyte disturbance assay, evaluating hemocyte re-adhesion in Drosophila larvae's hematopoietic pockets. Mechanical disturbance releases resident hemocytes, elevating circulating hemocyte counts. Post-recovery, re-adherence of resident hemocytes is confirmed, illustrating reversibility.
