Surgical Recovery Protocol

A surgical recovery protocol is a structured plan for monitoring and supporting a patient after an operation, with the goal of restoring function, preventing complications, and guiding a safe return to daily activity. In neuroscience, it coordinates assessment of consciousness, cognition, sensation, movement, pain, and autonomic function; clinicians use changes in these measures to identify neural impairment or emerging complications and adjust rehabilitation, medication, and follow-up care. By linking postoperative observation with targeted physical, occupational, and cognitive rehabilitation, the protocol helps track neural recovery and functional outcomes after procedures involving the brain, spinal cord, or peripheral nerves, while providing standardized data for patient care and research.

Laser microdissection is a technique that allows the recovery of selected cells from minute amounts of parenchyma. Here we describe a protocol for acquiring human pancreatic islets from surgical specimens to be used for transcriptomic studies. Our protocol improves the intrinsic autofluorescence of human beta cells, thus facilitating their collection.

2011

Here we demonstrate the newly developed I•Cryo kit for mouse sperm cryopreservation. Two-cell stage embryo development with frozen-thawed sperm was improved consistently in 5 mouse strains with the use of this kit. Over a 1.5 year period, 49 genetically modified mouse lines were archived by sperm cryopreservation with the I•Cryo kit and later successfully recovered by IVF.

Surgical Protocol for a Large, Resealable Cranial Window Enabling Longitudinal, Multi-Modal Electrophysiology Recordings of Mouse Default Mode Network

2026

This protocol describes a two-phase surgical method to create a large, resealable, dura-sparing cranial window in mice. This technique enables chronic, multi-modal electrophysiological recordings from distributed, deep-brain networks, such as the Default Mode Network, over several weeks.
