Hemostatic Sponge

A hemostatic sponge is a porous, blood-compatible material placed at a bleeding site to support rapid local clot formation, especially when conventional control is difficult. Its interconnected matrix absorbs blood, concentrates cellular and soluble clotting components, and provides a physical scaffold that stabilizes the developing fibrin clot; depending on its composition, it may also promote platelet adhesion. In neuroscience and neurosurgery, absorbable sponges can help control bleeding during delicate brain or spinal procedures while conforming to irregular tissue surfaces. Their effectiveness, biocompatibility, and controlled resorption are important because excess material or swelling could compromise nearby neural structures.

We describe the simplest protocol to prepare biodegradable medical glue that has an effective hemostatic ability. TAPE is a water-immiscible supramolecular aggregate prepared by mixing of tannic acid, a ubiquitous compound found in plants, and poly(ethylene) glycol, yielding a 2.5 times greater water-resistant adhesion compared with commercial fibrin glue.

Tissue-specific microRNA inhibition is a technology that is underdeveloped in the microRNA field. Herein, we describe a protocol to successfully inhibit the miR-181 microRNA family in myoblast cells from the heart. Nanovector technology is used to deliver a microRNA sponge that demonstrates significant in vivo cardio-specific miR-181 family inhibition.
