High-definition Tdcs

High-definition tDCS is a noninvasive brain-stimulation technique that delivers weak direct electrical currents through the scalp using an array of small electrodes, enabling more spatially focused modulation of cortical activity than conventional tDCS. By arranging an anode, cathodes, or return electrodes in defined configurations, researchers shape the electric field so that current density and resulting changes in neuronal membrane excitability are concentrated over a selected brain region. In neuroscience, this approach supports investigations of brain function and network organization and is being evaluated for cognitive, motor, and clinical research applications. Its improved focality can help link stimulation sites with behavioral or physiological outcomes while informing future therapeutic protocols.

High-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS), with its 4x1-ring montage, is a noninvasive brain stimulation technique that combines both the neuromodulatory effects of conventional tDCS with increased focality. This article provides a systematic demonstration of the use of 4x1 HD-tDCS, and the considerations needed for safe and effective stimulation.
