Hippocampus Ca1

The hippocampus CA1 is a subregion of the hippocampal formation that integrates neural signals to support spatial navigation, contextual learning, and memory formation. In the canonical trisynaptic circuit, CA1 pyramidal neurons receive excitatory input from CA3 through Schaffer collateral fibers and from entorhinal cortex, while NMDA receptor activation can strengthen synapses through long-term potentiation. Because CA1 activity reflects both incoming information and local circuit processing, researchers use it to study place-cell coding, memory consolidation, synaptic plasticity, and vulnerability to conditions such as ischemia and epilepsy. CA1 recordings and imaging therefore provide important links between cellular mechanisms and cognition.

In Vitro Recording of Theta Oscillations in the Mouse Hippocampus

2025

This video demonstrates the recording of rhythmic neuronal network activity, also known as theta oscillations, in an isolated hippocampus. Electrodes are inserted into various layers and spatial positions to detect and analyze theta oscillations. This shows the unique neuronal compositions and the connectivity of the neuronal network across different layers of the hippocampus.

MicroRNAs have significant roles in brain structure and function. Here we describe a method to enforce hippocampal miRNA over-expression using stereotactic injection of an engineered miRNA-expressing lentivirus. This approach can serve as a relatively rapid way to assess the in vivo effects of over-expressed miRNAs in specific brain regions.

2025

This video demonstrates a method to record CA3-CA1 synaptic responses in a rat hippocampal slice. It outlines the steps involved in placing the stimulating and recording electrodes on the hippocampal slice and measuring the field excitatory postsynaptic potential (fEPSP) to assess synaptic response strength.
