In Vivo Neurophysiology

In vivo neurophysiology is the study of nervous system function in living organisms, providing direct insight into how neural circuits operate under natural biological conditions. Researchers measure electrical activity, synaptic signaling, sensory responses, or behavior using methods such as electrophysiological recording, calcium imaging, and neural stimulation while preserving intact brain and body systems. These approaches reveal how neurons communicate, how circuits process information, and how activity changes during learning, movement, disease, or drug exposure. In neuroscience, in vivo measurements complement cell and tissue models by linking cellular mechanisms to brain-wide function and behavior, supporting advances in basic research, neurological disease studies, and therapeutic development.

An Introduction to Neurophysiology

2023

Neurophysiology is broadly defined as the study of nervous system function. In this field, scientists investigate the central and peripheral nervous systems at the level of whole organs, cellular networks, single cells, or even subcellular compartments. A unifying feature of this wide-ranging discipline is an interest in the mechanisms that lead to the generation and propagation of electrical impulses within and between neurons. This subject is important not only for our understanding of the...

Attention control comprises enhancement of target signals and attenuation of distractor signals. We describe an approach to measure separately but concurrently, the neurophysiology of attending and ignoring in sustained intermodal attention, utilizing a passive control condition during which neither process is continuously engaged.

This protocol describes the process for performing a neurophysiological assessment of the lower extremity muscles, tibialis anterior and soleus, in a standing position using TMS in people post-stroke. This position provides a greater probability of eliciting a post-stroke TMS response and allows for the use of reduced stimulator power during neurophysiological assessments.
