Non-invasive Vascular Imaging

Non-invasive vascular imaging comprises methods that visualize blood vessels and assess blood flow without inserting a catheter, making it valuable for studying circulation in the brain and other tissues. Techniques such as Doppler ultrasound measure motion-dependent changes in reflected sound waves, while magnetic resonance imaging can map vessel anatomy and blood-flow patterns using magnetic fields and radiofrequency signals. In neuroscience, these approaches help characterize cerebrovascular structure, neurovascular coupling, perfusion, and abnormalities associated with stroke, tumors, and neurodegenerative disease. Because they can be repeated without surgical intervention, non-invasive vascular imaging supports longitudinal research and clinical monitoring of vascular function.

This method utilizes zebrafish embryos to efficiently test the vascular invasive ability of cancer cells. Fluorescent cancer cells are injected into the precardiac sinus or yolk sac of developing embryos. Cancer cell vascular invasion and extravasation is assessed via fluorescence microscopy of the tail region 24 to 96 hr later.

Changes in ovarian blood flow during the preovulatory period are essential for ovulation. Doppler ultrasonography has been used in humans and large animals to assess ovarian hemodynamics and perfusion. A protocol is presented for applying Doppler ultrasonography to evaluate ovarian hemodynamics during the preovulatory and periovulatory phases in mice.
