Macaque Retina

The macaque retina is the light-sensitive neural tissue at the back of the eye that converts visual information into signals for the brain, making it an important model of primate vision. Photoreceptors, including rods and cones, transduce light through opsin-based signaling, while bipolar, horizontal, amacrine, and ganglion cells shape these signals through layered synaptic circuits before ganglion-cell axons form the optic nerve. Its fovea and cone-rich organization support detailed, color-sensitive vision that closely resembles human visual processing. Studies of macaque retina help link retinal structure to perception, clarify mechanisms of retinal disease, and evaluate therapies, imaging methods, and visual prosthetic strategies.

2025

This study presents a pre-clinical heterotopic abdominal heart xenotransplantation model using α-Gal knockout (GTKO) pigs and macaques. The model incorporates optimized recipient selection, vascular anastomosis techniques, and perioperative management strategies. It is suitable for evaluating novel immunosuppressive agents and provides a convenient platform for advancing heart xenotransplantation.

The overall goal of this video is to show how to perform targeted retinal injection and in ovo electroporation of DNA/RNA constructs into the chick embryonic retina at the Hamburger and Hamilton stage 22-23, which is about embryonic day 4 (E4). This technique is very useful to study gene expression, gene regulation, and morphological change in developing chick retina.
