Medial Temporal Lobe

The medial temporal lobe (MTL) is a set of interconnected brain structures that supports the formation and retrieval of declarative memories, making it central to neuroscience and clinical research. Its hippocampus and surrounding cortices receive, organize, and bind information about events, places, and objects, then help consolidate newly encoded representations through interactions with distributed neocortical networks. Studying MTL function with lesion analysis, neuroimaging, electrophysiology, and behavioral memory tasks clarifies how learning occurs. This work informs understanding of amnesia, epilepsy, and Alzheimer’s disease, while guiding models of memory and potential strategies for diagnosis and intervention.
