Motor Dysfunction Assessment

Motor dysfunction assessment is the systematic evaluation of impaired movement, coordination, strength, balance, or motor control to characterize nervous system function. In neuroscience, clinicians and researchers observe movement and use standardized tasks, such as gait, reaching, repetitive actions, and reflex testing, to measure speed, accuracy, range of motion, muscle tone, and timing; patterns of abnormal performance can help indicate disruption within motor pathways. These assessments support diagnosis and monitoring of conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, or muscles, while quantitative tools such as motion capture and force measurement improve sensitivity to subtle changes and treatment-related outcomes.

Source:Tracey A. Milligan, MD; Tamara B. Kaplan, MD; Neurology, Brigham and Women's/Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, USA There are two main types of reflexes that are tested on a neurological examination: stretch (or deep tendon reflexes) and superficial reflexes. A deep tendon reflex (DTR) results from the stimulation of a stretch-sensitive afferent from a neuromuscular spindle, which, via a single synapse, stimulates a motor nerve leading to a muscle contraction. DTRs...
