Nervous System Anatomy

Nervous system anatomy is the study of the structures that receive, process, and transmit information throughout the body, providing the foundation for movement, sensation, thought, and homeostasis. It examines the central nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system, which connects these structures to sensory receptors, muscles, and organs through nerves and ganglia. Neurons communicate through electrical impulses and chemical synapses, while glial cells support, protect, and regulate neural tissue. In neuroscience, anatomical knowledge supports the interpretation of neural circuits, localization of function, diagnosis of neurological disorders, and development of treatments that restore or modify nervous system function.

The nervous system coordinates body functions through its complex network of nerve cells, enabling sensation and movement. It is divided into two primary parts: the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The CNS is composed of the brain and the spinal cord. The brain acts as the body's control center, processing sensory information and coordinating responses. The spinal cord functions as a major signaling pathway for the brain and the rest of the body. Extending...

Anatomy of the Eyeball

The eye is a spherical, hollow structure composed of three tissue layers. The outer layer — the fibrous tunic, comprises the sclera — a white structure — and the cornea, which is transparent. The sclera encompasses some of the ocular surface, most of which is not visible. However, the 'white of the eye' is distinctively visible in humans compared to other species. The cornea, a clear covering at the front of the eye, enables light penetration. The eye's middle layer, the vascular tunic,...
