Paddle Style Electrodes

Paddle style electrodes are flat, paddle-shaped neural interfaces that use multiple conductive contacts to record bioelectric signals or deliver controlled electrical stimulation, making them valuable for targeted neuromodulation. Their contacts sit against or near neural tissue, where electrode geometry, contact arrangement, and surrounding electrical properties shape the distribution of recorded signals or applied current. In neuroscience, these electrodes support spinal cord stimulation, cortical recording, and other experimental or clinical approaches for influencing neural circuits. Their broad contact surface can improve positioning and directional control, helping researchers investigate neural activity and develop treatments for disorders involving abnormal or impaired signaling.

Mice can swim, but many strains appear to find this activity stressful. To overcome this problem mazes have been devised where escape from shallow water is used to motivate behaviour. These have been demonstrated to support learning at least as good as the traditional and widely used Morris water maze.

Source: Remacle, T., et al. Treating Low Back Pain in Failed Back Surgery Patients with Multicolumn-lead Spinal Cord Stimulation. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates the method of using multicolumn paddle lead spinal cord stimulation to manage chronic lower back pain in Failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS) patients. The pre-implanted lead delivers targeted electrical pulses that activate non-painful sensory pathways, interrupting pain signals and reducing pain perception.

Attachment Styles

Jeffrey Simpson's attachment theory suggests that early caregiver relationships shape lasting patterns of behavior and emotional regulation, known as attachment styles. These patterns are organized along two key dimensions: self-esteem and interpersonal trust. The intersection of these dimensions produces four primary attachment styles that typically persist throughout life and significantly influence how individuals form and maintain relationships.Secure Attachment StyleIndividuals with a...

Diana Baumrind's four parenting styles — authoritarian, authoritative, neglectful, and permissive — each influence children's socio-emotional development differently. Authoritarian Parenting This style is strict and controlling, with little room for open dialogue. Authoritarian parents demand obedience and often enforce rules with minimal warmth. Children raised this way may lack social skills and initiative, usually comparing themselves to others unfavorably. Authoritative Parenting This...
