Perivascular Region

The perivascular region is the tissue immediately surrounding a blood vessel, where vascular cells, extracellular matrix, glial processes, and immune cells interact with the vessel wall and nearby neural tissue. In neuroscience, this microenvironment helps regulate blood-brain barrier permeability, neurovascular coupling, and the movement of fluids and solutes through mechanisms involving endothelial junctions, pericytes, astrocyte endfeet, and local signaling. Characterizing the perivascular region supports research on cerebral blood flow, brain inflammation, vascular and neurodegenerative disease, and drug delivery, while imaging and molecular profiling can reveal how vascular dysfunction influences neuronal health and disease progression.

Human perivascular stem cells (PSCs) are a novel stem cell class for skeletal tissue regeneration similar to mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). PSCs can be isolated by FACS (fluorescence activated cell sorting) from adipose tissue procured during standard liposuction procedures, then combined with an osteoinductive scaffold to achieve bone formation in vivo.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Perivascular Spaces in the Human Brain During a Small Vessel Stroke

2025

Perivascular spaces (PVS) are fluid-filled spaces around the brain blood vessels involved in fluid drainage. To examine alterations in PVS during a small vessel stroke, perform magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the basal ganglia region in the patient’s brain. The imaging protocol includes the T2-weighted fast spin echo and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) sequences.T2-weighted imaging enhances the contrast between cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-filled PVS and surrounding tissue.FLAIR...

Human cardiac tissue harbours multipotent perivascular precursor cell populations that may be suitable for myocardial regeneration. The technique described here allows for the simultaneous isolation and purification of two multipotent stromal cell populations associated with native blood vessels, i.e. CD146+CD34- pericytes and CD34+CD146- adventitial cells, from the human myocardium.

Here we report a method for isolation of Adipocyte Progenitor Cell (APC) populations from Perivascular Adipose Tissue (PVAT) using Magnetic-activated Cell Sorting (MCS). This method allows for an increased isolation of APC per gram of adipose tissue when compared to Fluorescence-Activated Cell Sorting (FACS).
