Robotic Tms

Robotic TMS, or robotic transcranial magnetic stimulation, uses an automated positioning system to deliver magnetic pulses to precisely selected regions of the brain, improving the consistency of stimulation. The system combines a TMS coil with motion control and, often, image-guided neuronavigation to maintain the coil’s location and orientation as the target or participant position changes; each pulse induces an electrical current in underlying cortical tissue. In neuroscience, robotic TMS supports reproducible studies of brain connectivity, motor-cortex mapping, and cortical excitability, while enabling repeated or adaptive stimulation protocols. These capabilities may improve research on neurological and psychiatric disorders and inform individualized rehabilitation or therapeutic interventions.

Using TMS to Measure Motor Excitability During Action Observation

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that involves passing current through an insulated coil placed against the scalp. A brief magnetic field is created by current in the coil, and because of the physical process of induction, this leads to a current in the nearby neural tissue. Depending on the duration, frequency, and magnitude of these magnetic...
