Silicone Oil Immersion

Silicone oil immersion is a microscopy technique that uses silicone oil between an immersion objective and a coverslip or imaging surface to improve optical performance. The oil provides a refractive index closer to that of glass and biological specimens, reducing refraction and spherical aberration as light passes through the optical path while supporting high numerical aperture imaging. In neuroscience, this approach can enhance the resolution, contrast, and consistency of fluorescence images of neurons and neural tissue, particularly during live-cell or tissue preparations. It is useful for visualizing cellular structures and activity when water or conventional oil immersion is not optimal.

Improved Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) Double Casting via Silicone Oil Treatment for Densely Packed Microstructure Replication

2025

This protocol presents an improved demolding procedure for the Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) double casting technique by introducing silicone oil as a non-adhesive barrier between PDMS layers. Unlike plasma or chemical surface modification methods, this approach requires no specialized or costly equipment, making it a more accessible and cost-effective alternative.

Source: Alexander S Rattner and Sanjay Adhikari; Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Objects, vehicles, and organisms immersed in fluid mediums experience forces from the surrounding fluid in the form of buoyancy- a vertical upward force due to fluid weight, drag- a resistive force opposite the direction of motion, and lift- a force perpendicular to the direction of motion. Prediction and characterization of these forces is...

Fabrication and Optimization of Type II Silicon Clathrate Films

2025

The two-thermal annealing method enables the fabrication of thin films of type II semiconductor silicon clathrate. Post-synthesis treatments, including thermal pressing and reactive ion etching, were performed to improve the material properties. This approach provides an accessible pathway for fabricating tunable clathrate films suitable for next-generation electronic and photonic devices.
