Social Behavior Mice

Social behavior in mice encompasses the ways individuals communicate, form social preferences, establish hierarchies, and respond to familiar or unfamiliar conspecifics, making it a useful model for studying the neural basis of behavior. Mice integrate olfactory, auditory, and tactile cues through interconnected brain circuits that regulate motivation, recognition, affiliation, aggression, and social avoidance. Researchers measure behaviors such as investigation, approach, interaction time, and social preference to evaluate how genes, hormones, neural activity, drugs, or disease alter these processes. This work supports neuroscience research on brain development, autism-related traits, anxiety, stress, and other conditions involving social behavior.

This protocol describes the modified hole board, which is a behavioral test set-up that comprises the characteristics of an open field and a traditional hole board. This set-up enables the differential analysis of unconditioned behavior of small laboratory mammals as well as the analysis of cognitive abilities.
