Spatial Derivative Estimation

Spatial derivative estimation is a method for quantifying how a measured signal changes across position, helping reveal local gradients and boundaries in spatial data. It typically compares neighboring measurements using finite-difference calculations or fits a smooth function before evaluating its rate of change, with accuracy influenced by sampling resolution and noise. In neuroscience, this approach can characterize spatial variations in neural activity, voltage, sensory representations, or imaging signals, supporting analysis of response fields and anatomical organization. Reliable spatial derivatives help researchers identify localized features and relate patterns of neural signals to underlying circuits and functional processes.

Spatial Cueing

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Attention refers to the limited human ability to select some information for processing at the expense of other stimuli in the environment. Attention operates in all sensory modalities: vision, hearing, touch, even taste and smell. It is most often studied in the visual domain though. A common way to study visual attention is with a spatial cueing paradigm. This paradigm allows researchers to measure the consequences of focusing...

What are Estimates?

It isn't easy to measure a parameter such as the mean height or the mean weight of a population. So, we draw samples from the population and calculate the mean height or mean weight of the individuals in the sample. This sample data acts as a representative measure of the population parameter. These sample statistics are known as estimates. The estimate for the mean of a sample is denoted by ͞x, whereas the mean of the population is designated as μ. Further, parameters such as the mean,...

Spatial Separation of Molecular Conformers and Clusters

We present a technique that allows the spatial separation of different conformers or clusters present in a molecular beam. An electrostatic deflector is used to separate species by their mass-to-dipole moment ratio, leading to the production of gas-phase ensembles of a single conformer or cluster stoichiometry.
