Temporal Semantic Stream

Temporal Semantic Stream is a neuroscience framework for describing how the brain represents and updates meaning over time as sensory information unfolds. It links successive stages of processing, in which early perceptual features are transformed into increasingly integrated semantic representations through coordinated activity across temporal-lobe and broader cortical networks. Researchers use this perspective to study language comprehension, object and scene recognition, memory, and the timing of neural responses measured with methods such as EEG, MEG, and neuroimaging. Characterizing this stream can clarify how meaning emerges from dynamic input and how disruptions in temporal processing contribute to communication and cognitive disorders.

Language: The N400 in Semantic Incongruity

2023

Source: Laboratories of Sarah I. Gimbel and Jonas T. Kaplan— University of Southern California Understanding language is one of the most complex cognitive tasks that humans are capable of. Given the incredible amount of possible choices when combining individual words to form meaning in sentences, it is crucial that the brain is able to identify when words form coherent combinations and when an anomaly appears that undermines meaning. Extensive research has shown that certain scalp-recorded...

In two-dimensional incompressible fluid flow, the continuity equation is essential for ensuring mass conservation, meaning that any change in fluid entering or exiting a region is balanced by a corresponding change elsewhere. For incompressible flow, where density remains constant, this requirement simplifies to the condition that the divergence of the velocity field must be zero. Mathematically, this is expressed as, where u and v represent the horizontal and vertical velocity components,...

Interaction between Phonological and Semantic Processes in Visual Word Recognition using Electrophysiology

We present a protocol to explore the relative activation sequence of phonology and semantics in visual word recognition. The results show that consistent with interactive accounts, semantic and phonological representations may be processed interactively, and higher-level linguistic representations may affect early processing.

Using event-related EEG potentials (ERPs), we investigate the effects of antipsychotic medications on abnormal semantic brain activations in healthy individuals with schizotypal traits. We use ERPs to track distinct changes in brain activity, shedding insight into the cognitive processes associated with semantic categorization.
