Theta Burst Stimulation

Theta burst stimulation (TBS) is a patterned form of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation that noninvasively changes the excitability of targeted brain regions, making it an important tool in neuroscience. It delivers brief bursts of three magnetic pulses at approximately 50 Hz, repeated at a theta frequency of about 5 Hz; intermittent and continuous patterns can produce opposing, typically facilitatory or suppressive, effects on cortical activity. Researchers use TBS to investigate synaptic plasticity, neural circuits, and brain-behavior relationships. Its short treatment duration also supports studies of neurological and psychiatric disorders and the development of potential therapeutic interventions.

Source: Holbrook, C., et al. Continuous Theta Burst Stimulation of the Posterior Medial Frontal Cortex to Experimentally Reduce Ideological Threat Responses. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates the application of continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) to modulate responses to ideological threats. Electromyography (EMG) electrodes record motor signals, while a magnetic coil stimulates the primary motor cortex to determine the active motor threshold (aMT). The coil is then repositioned...

Theta-Burst Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation to Promote Stroke Recovery in Rats

Take a rat with a focal ischemic stroke in the brain cortex, resulting in a compromised BBB, reduced blood flow, and excessive neuronal activity.Stroke also induces astrocyte activation, leading to the formation of neurotoxic astrocytes that release pro-inflammatory cytokines. This triggers neuroinflammation, leading to neuronal and endothelial cell degeneration.Restrain the rat and position the rTMS coil over the ischemic region.Administer theta-burst rTMS for several days. The electromagnetic...

Auditory processing is the basis of speech and music-related processing. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) has been used successfully to study cognitive, sensory and motor systems but has rarely been applied to audition. Here we investigated TMS combined with functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging to understand the functional organization of auditory cortex.

Continuous Theta Burst Stimulation of the Posterior Medial Frontal Cortex to Experimentally Reduce Ideological Threat Responses

Threats reliably evoke shifts in high-level ideological investment, but little work to date has explored the neural mechanisms underlying these dynamics. This paper describes how continuous theta burst transcranial magnetic stimulation may be employed to test the contribution of the posterior medial frontal cortex (and/or other regions) to threat-related ideological shifts.
