Nonproprietary Name

A nonproprietary name is the standardized, non-brand name assigned to a medication’s active ingredient, allowing it to be identified consistently across manufacturers and countries. Unlike a proprietary or trade name, it is not owned as a product trademark and refers to the substance responsible for the drug’s pharmacological effect, regardless of formulation or manufacturer. In pharmacology, nonproprietary names support clear prescribing, medication labeling, literature searches, and comparison of equivalent products. They also help researchers and healthcare professionals connect a drug with its mechanism of action, therapeutic class, adverse effects, and clinical evidence without relying on brand-specific terminology.
