Sudden Cardiac Death

Sudden cardiac death is an unexpected fatal loss of cardiac function, usually caused by an electrical disturbance that produces ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation rather than a gradual decline in heart performance. These arrhythmias can arise when ischemia, structural heart disease, or inherited channel abnormalities disrupt myocardial excitability and impulse conduction, preventing effective ventricular contraction and rapidly stopping circulation. In pharmacology, understanding these mechanisms guides the evaluation of medicines that alter ion channels, autonomic signaling, or cardiac repolarization, since some drugs can suppress dangerous rhythms while others prolong the QT interval and increase risk. This topic therefore supports safer drug development, risk assessment, and emergency treatment strategies.

This article reports the development of a neuro-rehabilitation approach, "constraint-induced sound therapy (CIST)" for sudden sensorineural hearing loss. The aim of CIST is to prevent maladaptive cortical reorganization by using an enriched acoustic environment. CIST represents a safe, easy, inexpensive, and effective approach to treat sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

An Introduction to Cell Death

2023

Necrosis, apoptosis, and autophagic cell death are all manners in which cells can die, and these mechanisms can be induced by different stimuli, such as cell injury, low nutrient levels, or signaling proteins. Whereas necrosis is considered to be an “accidental” or unexpected form of cell death, evidence exists that apoptosis and autophagy are both programmed and “planned” by cells. In this introductory video, JoVE highlights key discoveries pertaining to cell death, including recent work done...
