Biologics Manufacturing

Biologics manufacturing is the controlled production of medicines and other therapeutic products from living cells or biological systems, requiring consistent conditions to preserve product quality and activity. It combines cell growth in bioreactors with downstream recovery and purification, while principles of fluid flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, and mixing govern how nutrients, oxygen, temperature, and waste move through the process. Applying these principles helps engineers scale production from laboratory vessels to industrial systems, improve yield and reproducibility, and maintain safety and consistency in vaccines, biologic drugs, and other advanced therapies.

Steel Manufacturing

2024

Steel manufacturing is a multi-stage process that begins by smelting iron ore into cast iron in a blast furnace. This initial stage involves layering iron ore with coke, a type of fuel, and crushed limestone within the furnace. The coke is ignited with a high volume of air, leading to the creation of carbon monoxide, which acts to reduce the iron ore to pure iron. During this smelting process, limestone plays a crucial role by forming slag. Slag captures impurities within the molten iron, such...

Good Manufacturing Practices

2026

Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) constitute a foundational set of guidelines that ensure the production of safe, consistent, and high-quality products, particularly in industries such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and food processing. These protocols encompass all aspects of production, from the sourcing of raw materials to the final distribution of the finished product.A core pillar of GMP is stringent hygiene and sanitation across all production environments. This includes routine...

This video presents synthetic biology and its role in bioengineering. Synthetic biology refers to the methods used to genetically modify organisms in order to make them capable of producing large quantities of a product. This product could be a protein that the cell already makes or a new protein that has been encoded in a newly-inserted DNA sequence. Here, we discuss how an organism's genetic material is modified using transformation or transfection. Then, the process is shown in the...

What is Conservation Biology?

2019

Conservation biology is a scientific field that focuses on the preservation of biodiversity in order to protect ecosystems while meeting the needs of the human population. Humans require properly functioning ecosystems to maintain our supply of natural resources, including food, medicines, and building materials. Ecosystems also perform critical services, such as purifying our air and water. A large body of evidence indicates that such ecosystem services depend on biodiversity. Furthermore,...
