Bragg Grating

A Bragg grating is a periodic variation in the refractive index of a material that selectively reflects waves at particular wavelengths through coherent scattering. When light or another wave encounters the regularly spaced structure, reflections from successive regions interfere constructively at the Bragg wavelength, while other wavelengths largely pass through. In optical fibers, this wavelength-selective behavior enables narrowband filters, wavelength-division multiplexing, and distributed feedback in fiber lasers. Because the reflected wavelength shifts when the grating experiences strain or temperature changes, Bragg gratings also provide compact, highly sensitive sensors for structural monitoring, industrial systems, and experimental physics.

We describe a technique for inscribing identical fiber Bragg gratings into each core of a multicore fiber. This is achieved by introducing an additional surface into the optical path to mitigate lensing by the curved surface of the fiber cladding.

The measurement protocol and data analysis procedure are given for obtaining transverse coherence of a synchrotron radiation X-ray source along four directions simultaneously using a single 2-D checkerboard phase grating. This simple technique can be applied for complete transverse coherence characterization of X-ray sources and X-ray optics.

2015

The fabrication of high contrast gratings as the parallel spectrum splitting dispersive element in a concentrated photovoltaic system is demonstrated. Fabrication processes including nanoimprint lithography, TiO2 sputtering and reactive ion etching are described. Reflectance measurement results are used to characterize the optical performance.
