Historical Electricity Experiments

Historical electricity experiments are investigations that trace how scientists established the nature of electric charge, current, voltage, resistance, and electromagnetism, making them a foundation for modern physics. By observing effects such as attraction and repulsion, charge transfer between materials, current through conductors, and magnetic fields produced by moving charges, researchers converted qualitative observations into testable physical laws. Studying these experiments shows how measurement, controlled conditions, and mathematical models transformed electricity from an observable phenomenon into a predictive science, while connecting early discoveries to circuit analysis, electrical technology, and the development of experimental methods.

Historical Cost Principle

2025

The Historical Cost Principle is a fundamental accounting concept that requires businesses to record assets at their original purchase price. This principle ensures that the value of assets is based on actual transactions, making financial records objective and verifiable. Since documents like invoices or contracts support the recorded cost, they provide a clear and consistent basis for maintaining accounts over time. This principle is especially important for creating reliable and stable...

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN Electric potential, also known as "voltage", measures the electric potential energy per unit charge. Electric field is a scalar quantity and is fundamental to many electrical effects. Like potential energy, what is physically meaningful is the difference in the electric potential. For example, the spatial variation in the electric potential is related to the electric...

Gene transfection by electroporation is improved approximately two times when orientation of electric field is changed during pulse application, while cell viability is not affected. The increase in gene transfection is caused by the increase of the membrane area which is made competent for DNA entry into the cell.

Electric Fields

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN An electric field is generated by a charged object (referred to as the source charge) in the space around it, and represents the ability to exert electric force on another charged object (referred to as the test charge). Represented by a vector at any given point in the space, the electric field is the electrical force per unit test charge placed at that point (the force...

The Factorial Experiment

Source: Laboratories of Gary Lewandowski, Dave Strohmetz, and Natalie Ciarocco—Monmouth University A factorial design is a common type of experiment where there are two or more independent variables. This video demonstrates a 2 x 2 factorial design used to explore how self-awareness and self-esteem may influence the ability to decipher nonverbal signals. This video leads students through the basics of a factorial design including, the nature of a factorial design and what distinguishes it from...
