Launch Origin

Launch origin is the initial position and reference point from which an object begins motion, providing the basis for describing its trajectory in physics. In a coordinate system, the launch origin establishes the starting coordinates, while the launch velocity, direction, and acceleration determine how position changes with time under forces such as gravity. Defining this point enables researchers and students to model projectile motion, compare measured and predicted paths, and analyze launches in laboratory and engineering settings. Accurate origin selection also supports consistent frame-of-reference choices and improves interpretation of motion data.

Origin of Photosynthesis

2026

Photosynthesis represents a fundamental biological process that transformed Earth's atmosphere and paved the way for complex life. Emerging roughly 3.4–3.8 billion years ago, the earliest photosynthetic organisms harnessed light energy to produce organic compounds. These anoxygenic phototrophs used electron donors like hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) or ferrous iron (Fe²⁺), rather than water, and did not release molecular oxygen (O₂) as a byproduct. Various groups, including green sulfur and purple...

Origin of Cellular Life

2026

The origin of life on Earth is a complex and enigmatic event rooted in ancient biochemical processes and geological conditions. Experimental evidence supports the hypothesis that life began with the spontaneous formation of organic molecules such as RNA nucleotides, amino acids, and lipids under early Earth conditions. Factors like volcanic activity, intense UV radiation, and a reducing atmosphere without free oxygen likely facilitated these reactions. Hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor are...

Cited by 5 •

2016

Oxidation stability of transport fuels has become a concern for future fuel development. This work presents an original methodology developed by IFP Energies Nouvelles for assessing fuel stability using two different reactors. This methodology was successfully applied to gain an in-depth understanding of the oxidation kinetics and pathways of model molecules and commercial fuels.

Investigating the Origins of Sensory Neurons in the Dura Mater Using Fluorescence Microscopy

Source: Wang, J., et al. Visualizing the Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide Immunoreactive Innervation of the Rat Cranial Dura Mater with Immunofluorescence and Neural Tracing. J. Vis. Exp. (2021). This video demonstrates a method to trace the origins of sensory neurons in the dura mater using fluorescence microscopy. A retrograde tracer is introduced into the exposed dura mater of an anesthetized rat. The tracer is taken up by sensory neuronal axons and travels retrogradely to their cell bodies...

Cancers Originate from Somatic Mutations in a Single Cell

2021

Cancer arises from mutations in the critical genes that allow healthy cells to escape cell cycle regulation and acquire the ability to proliferate indefinitely. Though originating from a single mutation event in one of the originator cells, cancer progresses when the mutant cell lines continue to gain more and more mutations, and finally, become malignant. For example, chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) develops initially as a non-lethal increase in white blood cells, which progressively...
