Plasma Diagnostics

Plasma diagnostics is the collection of methods used to measure the properties and behavior of ionized gases, making otherwise invisible plasma processes accessible to physics research. These methods infer quantities such as electron temperature, particle density, composition, flow, and electromagnetic conditions by analyzing emitted light, transmitted radiation, or the plasma’s response to inserted probes. Spectroscopy, interferometry, and electrical probes can reveal how particles exchange energy and how instabilities develop under different conditions. Plasma diagnostics supports research in fusion energy, space and astrophysical plasmas, semiconductor processing, and industrial discharges by testing models, optimizing operating conditions, and identifying limits to stable plasma confinement.
