Small Numbers

Small numbers in physics are quantities with magnitudes much less than one, and they matter because they can reveal weak interactions, low probabilities, or effects that contribute only slightly to a system’s behavior. Physicists assess them through ratios, scaling, and dimensionless parameters; when a parameter is sufficiently small, higher-order terms may be neglected in an approximation or treated as perturbations to a dominant process. This reasoning supports models across quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, fluid dynamics, and experimental analysis, helping researchers simplify equations, estimate measurement significance, compare competing effects, and identify when a physical description remains valid.

Epicardial Outgrowth Culture Assay and Ex Vivo Assessment of Epicardial-derived Cell Migration

2016

Here, we describe methods for isolating primary mouse epicardial cells by an outgrowth culture assay and assessing the functional migration of epicardial-derived cells (EPDC) using an ex vivo heart culture system. These protocols are suitable for identifying genetic and chemical modulators of epicardial epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and motility.

An Introduction to Parasitic Wasps of Drosophila and the Antiparasite Immune Response

2012

Parasitoid (parasitic) wasps constitute a major class of natural enemies of many insects including Drosophila melanogaster. We will introduce the techniques to propagate these parasites in Drosophila spp. and demonstrate how to analyze their effects on immune tissues of Drosophila larvae.

Ocular Therapeutic Delivery and Advanced Tissue Retrieval in Adult Rats

2025

This study presents a methodology for the delivery of therapeutics into the retina and optic nerves of the adult rat. Additionally, a unique tissue retrieval method is introduced for a top-down en bloc collection of the optic nerve and retina in an adult rat.

2018

The main focus of this protocol is to efficiently isolate viable primary glomeruli cultures with minimal contaminants for use in a variety of downstream applications. The isolated glomeruli retain structural relationships between component cell types and can be cultured ex vivo for a short time.

Real-Time DC-dynamic Biasing Method for Switching Time Improvement in Severely Underdamped Fringing-field Electrostatic MEMS Actuators

2014

The robust device design of fringing-field electrostatic MEMS actuators results in inherently low squeeze-film damping conditions and long settling times when performing switching operations using conventional step biasing. Real-time switching time improvement with DC-dynamic waveforms reduces the settling time of fringing-field MEMS actuators when transitioning between up-to-down and down-to-up states.
