Information Consolidation

Information consolidation is the psychological process through which newly acquired information becomes more stable, organized, and accessible in long-term memory. It begins with changes at synapses that strengthen neural connections and can continue through systems-level reorganization, as memories gradually become less dependent on the hippocampus and more distributed across cortical networks. Sleep, repetition, and meaningful associations can support this stabilization, while interference may disrupt it. Studying consolidation helps explain how learning persists, why memories change over time, and how attention, sleep, aging, stress, and neurological disorders influence memory formation and retention.
