Interpersonal Influence

Interpersonal influence is the process through which one person’s thoughts, feelings, decisions, or behavior affect another, making it a central concept in psychology and social interaction. It operates through mechanisms such as persuasion, conformity, compliance, social norms, and the interpretation of verbal and nonverbal cues, with outcomes shaped by factors including trust, authority, group context, and perceived similarity. Studying interpersonal influence helps explain everyday communication, leadership, teamwork, relationships, and collective behavior. Research in this area also informs approaches to health communication, education, conflict resolution, and organizational decision-making while clarifying how influence can support cooperation or contribute to manipulation and social pressure.
