Mental Illness

Mental illness refers to a range of health conditions that significantly affect a person’s thoughts, emotions, behavior, or ability to function, making it a central subject in psychology and public health. These conditions arise through complex interactions among biological factors, psychological processes, development, and social or environmental experiences, and may involve changes in mood regulation, perception, cognition, or behavior. Psychological assessment uses clinical interviews, observation, and standardized measures to identify symptoms and guide diagnosis. Research on mental illness supports evidence-based therapies, prevention strategies, and interventions that improve well-being, reduce stigma, and clarify how mind, brain, and context shape human behavior.
