Outgroup Member

An outgroup member is a person perceived as belonging to a social group different from one’s own, making the concept central to understanding social identity and intergroup relations in psychology. Through social categorization, people distinguish an in-group from an outgroup using characteristics such as culture, beliefs, status, or shared affiliations; these boundaries can shape attention, judgments, expectations, and behavior. Studying outgroup members helps explain stereotyping, prejudice, discrimination, and patterns of cooperation or conflict between groups. Research in this area also informs strategies for reducing bias, improving contact across social divisions, and promoting more equitable relationships in educational, organizational, and community settings.

Five-Membered Heterocyclic Aromatic Compounds: Overview

2023

Heterocyclic aromatic compounds are cyclic compounds that are aromatic and have one or more heteroatoms—atoms other than carbon, in the ring. Depending upon the number of atoms present in the ring, they can be either five or six-membered. Examples of five-membered heterocyclic aromatic compounds include pyrrole, furan, thiophene, and imidazole. Pyrrole consists of one nitrogen atom having one lone pair of electrons. Furan and thiophene have one oxygen and one sulfur heteroatom, respectively.

The Multi-group Experiment

Source: Laboratories of Gary Lewandowski, Dave Strohmetz, and Natalie Ciarocco—Monmouth University A multi-group design is an experimental design that has 3 or more conditions/groups of the same independent variable. This video demonstrates a multi-group experiment that examines how different interethnic ideologies (multiculturalism and color-blind) influence feelings about diversity and actions toward and out-group member. In providing an overview of how a researcher conducts a multi-group...

2019

A simple and reliable diet-induced rodent animal model for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is described, achieved through non-SPF housing of the animals and administration of a specific high-fat diet. We describe identification of hepatic and adipose immune cell subsets to recapitulate human immunological conditions by exposing mice to environmental germs.

This applied experimental paradigm replicates circumstances by which an eyewitness to a real crime may create a holistic facial composite of the culprit from memory, and then attempt to identify the culprit from a video line-up containing the culprit or one in which he or she is not present.
