Dr. Gemma Chiva-Blanch obtained a PhD in Medicine from the University of Barcelona, Spain. During the postdoctoral period, she investigated the potential of extracellular vesicles as biomarkers of different cardiovascular pathological stages. She performed a research stage at the Centre for Clinical Heart Research, Department of Cardiology, Oslo University Hospital Ullevål, Norway, deepening into the relationship between thrombosis, myocardial infarction and cardiovascular mortality and the levels and phenotype of extracellular vesicles. She is currently a CIBEROBN Research Fellow at the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS) of Barcelona, Spain, and nucleus of the Scientists of Tomorrow from the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). Her current research is primarily focused on the role of extracellular vesicles in atherothrombosis, diabetes and obesity, as well as on the study of the influence of diet in extracellular vesicle shedding in the context of cardiovascular disease.

Collection Overview

Extracellular vesicles (EV) are emerging as new mediators of cell-to-cell communication, involved in the pathophysiology of a plethora of diseases. EV are a composite of heterogeneous phospholipid bilayer-surrounded particles ranged between 30 and 5000nm in diameter, namely exosomes, microvesicles and apoptotic bodies. EV are potentially generated and released by almost all eukaryotic cells, and contain bioactive compounds (such as lipids, proteins, RNA and metabolites), determining its mechanism of action and also reflecting the state of its cell of origin. Given their pathophysiological relevance, EV have been the object of intensive research in the last decade. However, research in the properties, structure, composition, pathophysiological activity and metabolism/clearance of EV is still technically limited by the EV extraction and purification methodology. This method collection is aimed at reporting methods of isolation and purification of EV, for further downstream applications.
