Patient Controls

Patient controls are research participants who have a clinical condition but do not have the disorder or characteristic under investigation. In psychology studies, researchers select and assess these participants using diagnostic interviews, symptom measures, or behavioral tasks, then compare their results with those of the target patient group to separate disorder-specific effects from influences shared by illness, treatment, or healthcare contact. Patient controls strengthen experimental comparisons in clinical, cognitive, and behavioral research by clarifying whether observed differences reflect the target disorder rather than general clinical distress, supporting more precise interpretation of psychological mechanisms and treatment outcomes.

2013

Individuals with intermittent claudication exhibit poor balance compared to healthy controls. Computerized dynamic posturography is an objective method for measuring an individual's postural responses to balance disturbances. This provides an objective reflection of the person’s ability to respond to situations under which sensory stimuli are altered and unexpected perturbations occur.

Eye-Tracking Control to Assess Cognitive Functions in Patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Cognitive deficits are common in about one third of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a neurological condition leading to progressive impairments in speech and movement abilities. To conduct cognitive tests in patients unable to speak or write a reliable and easy to administer eye-tracking paradigm was developed.
