Womb Envy

Womb envy is a psychoanalytic concept describing the supposed envy some men may feel toward women’s capacity for pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding, often discussed as a counterpart to penis envy. The concept proposes that awareness of reproductive differences can generate feelings of inadequacy or exclusion, which may be managed through psychological defenses such as devaluing women, emphasizing male achievement, or seeking control and recognition. In psychology, womb envy helps researchers examine how reproductive roles, gender identity, power, and cultural expectations shape emotional life and social behavior, while also prompting critical analysis of gendered assumptions in classical psychoanalytic theory.

The Stereotype Content Model (SCM) was first proposed by Susan Fiske and her colleagues (Fiske, Cuddy, Glick & Xu, 2002; see also Fiske, 2012 and Fiske, 2017). The SCM specifies that when someone encounters a new group, they will stereotype them based on two metrics: warmth—or that group’s perceived intent, and how likely they are to provide help or inflict harm—and competence—or their ability to carry out that objective. Depending on the warmth-competence categorization, a person will feel...

Successful breeding of the laboratory mouse (Mus musculus) is critical to the establishment and maintenance of a productive animal colony. Additionally, mouse embryos are frequently studied to answer questions about developmental processes. A wide variety of genetic tools now exist for regulating gene expression during mouse embryonic and postnatal development, which can help scientists to understand more about heritable diseases affecting human development. This video provides an introduction...
