Box And Whisker Plot

A box and whisker plot is a statistical graph that summarizes the distribution, center, and spread of numerical data, making patterns and unusual values easy to compare. It organizes observations using the minimum, first quartile, median, third quartile, and maximum, while the box represents the interquartile range and the whiskers extend to the most extreme values within a defined range. Individual points beyond the whiskers may indicate outliers. In statistics, box and whisker plots help assess variability, skewness, and potential data anomalies across groups, supporting exploratory data analysis and informed decisions about further statistical modeling.

Microsoft Excel: Median, Quartile range, and Box Plots

In Microsoft Excel, calculating the median, interquartile range, and creating box plots can help understand the distribution of your data. Median and Quartile Range: The median is calculated using the formula `=MEDIAN(range)', which provides the middle value of your data set. Quartiles divide your data into four equal parts. To find the first and third quartiles, use ‘=QUARTILE(range, 1)' and ‘=QUARTILE(range, 3)', respectively. The interquartile range (IQR), which measures data spread, is...

Arrhenius Plots

The Arrhenius equation relates the activation energy and the rate constant, k, for chemical reactions. In the Arrhenius equation, k = Ae−Ea/RT, R is the ideal gas constant, which has a value of 8.314 J/mol·K, T is the temperature on the kelvin scale, Ea is the activation energy in J/mole, e is the constant 2.7183, and A is a constant called the frequency factor, which is related to the frequency of collisions and the orientation of the reacting molecules. The Arrhenius equation can be used to...

The preparation presented here for whisker-signaled eyeblink conditioning in head-fixed mice precisely stimulates specific whiskers while allowing mice to ambulate on a cylindrical treadmill. A whisker stimulation conditioned stimulus (CS) paired with a periorbital shock unconditioned stimulus (US) results in reliable associative learning on this apparatus.

Functional Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy of the Rat Barrel Cortex During Whisker Stimulation

Source: Blanc, J., et al. Functional Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy at 7 T in the Rat Barrel Cortex During Whisker Activation. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates the method of analyzing metabolic changes in the rat barrel cortex using functional magnetic resonance spectroscopy during whisker stimulation. Baseline metabolite spectra are compared with stimulated spectra to detect lactate increase in the barrel cortex, confirming successful neuronal activation.

Bode Plots

Bode plots are graphical tools that use logarithmic scales for frequency on the x-axis and gain in decibels on the y-axis. This logarithmic method allows a wide range of frequencies to be compactly displayed, enabling the analysis of component effects on circuit behavior across a broad frequency spectrum. A network function represents the ratio of a system's output to its input, with the magnitude and phase angle derived from the complex network function. The decibel logarithmic gain is...
