Data Sorting

Data sorting is the process of arranging observations or records according to one or more variables, making patterns and relationships easier to inspect and analyze in statistics. It works by applying a defined ordering rule, such as ascending or descending numerical values, alphabetical categories, dates, or ranked scores, while preserving the association among values in each record. Sorted data can reveal minimum and maximum values, gaps, repeated observations, trends, and potential outliers, and it supports procedures such as calculating medians, assigning ranks, constructing frequency tables, and preparing visualizations. Careful sorting also improves data organization and helps researchers detect entry errors before statistical analysis.

Source: Laboratories of Nicholaus Noles and Judith Danovitch—University of Louisville Infants are born with amazing cognitive resources at their disposal, but they don’t know how to use them effectively. In order to harness the power of their brains, humans must develop high-level cognitive processes that manage basic brain functions. These processes make up what psychologists refer to as executive function. Executive function is a key factor in many self-regulatory behaviors, including forming...

A method for isolating specific cell types from plant material is demonstrated. This technique employs transgenic marker lines expressing fluorescent proteins in particular cell types, cellular dissociation and Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorting. Additionally, a growth setup is established here that facilitates treatment of Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings prior to cell sorting.

We describe a sorting strategy for mouse spermatids using flow cytometry. Spermatids are sorted into four highly pure populations, including round (spermiogenesis steps 1-9), early elongating (spermiogenesis steps 10-12), late elongating (spermiogenesis steps 13-14) and elongated spermatids (spermiogenesis steps 15-16). DNA staining, size and granulosity are used as selection parameters.
