Simple View Of Reading

The Simple View of Reading is a framework that explains reading comprehension as the combined result of two foundational abilities: decoding written words and understanding spoken language. Its core principle is often represented as Reading Comprehension = Decoding × Language Comprehension, meaning that weakness in either component can limit overall reading performance. In statistics and education research, this model guides the measurement of reading skills, supports analysis of learner profiles, and helps researchers examine how decoding and language comprehension contribute to outcomes across development. It also informs assessment, instructional planning, and studies of reading difficulties.

Research articles are structured documents designed to communicate scientific findings efficiently and transparently. Rather than reading them sequentially like a narrative, readers can approach them strategically by understanding their standardized organization. Evaluating the title, authors, and institutional affiliations provides an initial indication of relevance, expertise, and credibility. The Abstract offers a concise summary of the study’s objective, methodology, and main findings,...

Uncertainty in Measurement: Reading Instruments

Counting is the type of measurement that is free from uncertainty, provided the number of objects being counted does not change during the process. Such measurements result in exact numbers. By counting the eggs in a carton, for instance, one can determine exactly how many eggs are there in the carton. Similarly, the numbers of defined quantities are also exact. For example, 1 foot is exactly 12 inches, 1 inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters, and 1 gram is exactly 0.001 kilograms. Quantities...

Source: Laboratories of Gary Lewandowski, Dave Strohmetz, and Natalie Ciarocco—Monmouth University A two-group design is the simplest way to establish a cause-effect relationship between two variables. This video demonstrates a simple experiment (two-group design). In providing an overview of how a researcher conducts a simple experiment (two-group design), this video shows viewers the process of turning ideas into testable ideas and forming hypothesis, the identification and effect of...
